I'm a centre right voter and Jan is centre left (verging on a pinko commie
Let me explain.
We were discussing the need to feed the birds during summer months. We give them seeds, peanuts and fat balls. Birds just do not go hungry around here.
They get a veritable feast of bird type food and they get through a huge amount of the stuff. I have to refill the seed box everyday.
I said yes, we should carry on feeding them throughout the summer and Jan said no. I feel we should do all we can to help the poor unfortunate things and basically she doesn't think they should be fed in summer months and objects to the little darlings living off free handouts and also feels that they should work harder for their food.
I vote right but behave left whilst Jan votes left but behaves right.
All very confusing but in the meantime the birds are getting fatter and await the outcome of our deliberations with clenched beaks (or until you are told what to do -Ed).
We have had the very same discussion here. Having watched the little beauties constantly backwards and forwards to feed up to 6 babies we decided that they expend enough energy collecting the food that is on hand. If they had to forage, less would survive in our already declining bird population. So we will continue.
ReplyDeleteForgot about the babies although I should have known since I keep coming across birds in courtship rituals in the garden. So we'll keep on feeding them for a bit. Until I think they're really sponging off us and becoming lazy!
ReplyDeleteJust thought - can you clench a beak?
ReplyDeleteI don't know but it creates an amusing caricature.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kathy. It's nice to talk to someone with an open mind.
ReplyDeleteSame here. We decided to carry on feeding as if you stop you are changing the habitat and risk losing or changing the bird population.
ReplyDeleteThey tend to eat less feed in summer as other stuff is available, but in any case we decided we get so much pleasure from having them in our garden it was worth the expense.
Jean, I agree, having them in the garden is my main motivation.
