Harrogate

I've always said that Harrogate is somewhere that you want to leave when you're 18 years old but when you get to 50 you wonder why you ever thought like that and want to get back.
Reading this article the other day made me realise how lucky we are to live where we do. The move from France to Yorkshire was mostly motivated for the need to be nearer my mother as she grows older and more frail but having said that we've been pleasantly surprised about how good the weather has been, how nice the people are and how good the shops are. Not nice weather in a tropical sort of way but plenty of sunshine, little rain and temperatures not exceeding 20C, sort of way.
It's easy to complain about where you live but having now lived in various places in the UK and also France I can honestly say that you could do a lot worse than this part of the world. You could spend a lot of time researching places to live but for me the best place to live is wherever Jan is (OK, sorry, pass the sick bucket).

  1. I notice that none of the places I have ever lived are on the list. Maybe that's why we find the Brits rude, selfish, foul mouthed and really aggressive drivers. We live in the wrong part of the UK, obviously!

    1. You could well be right but I didn't provide a 'list'. In terms of aggressive and/or dangerous drivers where we lived in France takes some beating, the driving was unbelievable. But then again it would be foolish to say that that is true of the whole of France or the whole of England. I can only speak of my direct experiences.

    2. You should try driving round Chesterfield at any time of day, battling with nutters who drive too fast, push their way past parked cars, jump the lights and change lanes without bothering to look.....
It's a zillion times better in our part of rural France where the traffic is very light and on the whole there is so much less stress and aggravation on the roads.
Derbyshire is beautiful, but you can't see its beauty from the endless traffic jams, the cars littering the streets of the pretty villages and the piles of litter in the hedge bottoms. You have to work hard to find the peace, quiet and beauty that is all around us in our part of France.

    3. I learnt to drive delivering pizzas in down-town Beirut. Chesterfield sounds like a dream.

  2. We love that part of the world... from Skipton eastwards... If we move it could be in that direction... Having just got married yesterday we agree with your sentiment entirely...
