We were both intrigued but not wishing to spoil whatever was in store we waited until 30th. When Jan opened it the puzzle deepened. The envelope was postmarked Swindon and neither of us knows anyone that lives there (or thereabouts) and the birthday card was signed Pat. Jan knows a couple of Pats but they don't live in Swindon and Jan's birthday is in March. So Pat, if by some coincidence you are reading this, thank you and Happy New Year.
The story continues. More musings from a returning expat Yorkshireman.

My dad gets a Christmas card delivered to his address every year which says "happy Christmas mum, love from Susan".
ReplyDeleteWhoever Susan is, one would think she would know her mum hasn't lived there for at least five years. In fact more than ten, as the surname of the person my dad bought the house from wasn't that of Susan's mum. The postmark is local.
It's rather sad ~ but I always insist my dad opens the card ~ in case there's a handy £20 note inside !!
That's a really good story, very funny. Thank you.
