A dog that tells the time

We never fail to be amazed at how smart the dogs are, well Max rather than Min. She just tends to follow him.
At a couple of points throughout each evening they get a treat, a chew, and one of the treats is around nine o'clock.
Last night we were both engrossed in something and I noticed that Max had sidled up and had settled his head on Jan's lap a sign that he wanted something. I'm not sure why but I looked at the clock and sure enough it was nine o'clock.
How does he do that?
Some treats are triggered by our actions which I can understand but how does he tell the time? Spooky.

  1. To follow on...........the dogs get their first 'treat' after we have eaten our evening meal, and only then. If I sit down afterwards or forget, Max will come over to me, push his nose under my arm and nudge me to get up. A clear indication that he wants something. How dare I forget!

They also know the usual time of a walk and start getting restless to remind me at around 4 o'clock. You could almost set your clocks by them. Definitely creatures of habit.

  2. It is a bit strange isn't it? Boris is the same. He knows that he usually gets his later meal at 3PM and he starts to remind us if it gets even 15 minutes later than that. Clive thinks he can hear the clocks chiming but I think it's an internal mechanism. Max looks very handsome BTW.

  3. Thanks Craig. Given that we used to live in the countryside and we weren't sure of any security problems we got a breed (Beauceron) that looked the business but we knew had a good temperament (they're also known as 'the gentlemen of the countryside'). If I saw Max at the other end of a dark corridor I know which way I'd be heading.
